Our history

Contrary to what the club name might suggest, as athletes we are of course almost all non-smokers ;-). The name is based on our history, and it goes back a long way.

In 1967, 27 "cigarette rollers" in Spandau founded the IG Tennis within B.A.T company sports..
Just 3 years later, with the help of the Spandau sports and youth welfare office, three clay courts with a clubhouse were inaugurated. Our beautiful tennis facility, which we still use today. It was played at the ASC until it was finished.
IG Tennis, which now has 67 members, joined the tennis association and was a founding member of the Berlin Tennis Company Sports Association. So in 1975 a women's and a men's team could be registered for competitions, both were quite successful. In 1977 the women narrowly lost the final, the men became champions in 1990 and 1991.
In 1992 the club celebrated its 25th anniversary.
In 1998 the clubhouse was redesigned, which cost about 80,000 DM at the time. The watering system for the tennis courts was installed at this time.
In addition to tennis, 120 members enjoyed a sociable club life with many parties, prize card plays, etc. The contribution at that time was 180 DM, B.A.T. donated 20,000 DM annually.
After the plant was closed, almost all young members went to Bayreuth
changed in order to keep the well-paid job.
In 2005 we became an independent club, initially as "Tennisclub British American Tobacco", which later became TC Tobacco Hakenfelde e.V.
Whole groups then entered, both from the ASC and later from Hakenfelde 75. With their integration, some arguments had to be settled.
Not without some trouble with the authorities, a watering system was built to water the courts for cost reasons.
In the peak of tennis, numerous women's and men's teams were very successful, so the H60 played in the master class.
As the tennis boom subsided, our membership shrank steadily in the years that followed.
We therefore decided in 2020 to cooperate with our immediate neighbor VfV Spandau Tennis, who went through a similar development. The joint use of the 7 courts allows playing on sand and artificial grass. The latter even all year round, 2 of them even under floodlights. Teams of many age groups are now open to ambitious players. Sports and socializing are much livelier with joint tournaments and events. A win-win from which both clubs benefit equally. Since 2023, the teams have been competing in the TVBB competitions as the "SG TC Tobacco Hakenfelde/VfV Spandau" syndicate.
At the same time, a new board of directors took numerous initiatives for further development. So today we are happy again to have more than 100 members, an active youth and an even more attractive facility to feel good.
